Narrative Medicine and the Humanization of Medical Practice, Education, and Management

2025-11-06

Over the past two decades, narrative medicine — a framework introduced by American physician and anthropologist Rita Charon — has evolved from a theoretical concept into a globally recognized approach. Today, its tools are integrated into clinical practice, medical education, and healthcare management systems.

In education, the narrative approach has become an essential component in the training of healthcare professionals, physicians, and social workers, fostering skills of empathetic listening and reflection. In clinical practice, it enables new forms of therapeutic relationships, where a case history becomes a human story and diagnosis is complemented by an understanding of the patient’s individuality.

Narrative practices are also entering the field of social projects, helping bridge communication gaps between healthcare systems and diverse social groups. At the same time, a digital transformation is underway: interactive platforms are emerging to collect patient stories, and telemedicine solutions are being developed to preserve the narrative dimension of consultations. In countries where narrative medicine is being implemented, it has become a natural complement to evidence-based medicine and lean management.

We invite authors to reflect on and analyze international experience, and to discuss the role of narrative medicine in clinical practice, education, and social projects as a possible response to the challenges of technologization and medicalization in healthcare.
